Kōgyo was an artist whose work included more than forty woodblock prints of flowers and (or) birds. Ten examples are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Many pictures resemble quick sketches because the true shapes of objects were only approximated with a series of narrow, overlapping black lines. In contrast, colors were true-to-life. Kōgyo used the almost-square format for most of his prints (e,g, pictures 1-9) instead of the traditional hanging scroll format (e.g. picture 10). To see more prints by Kōgyo click here.
